"PHYSICS IS FUN:  MEMOIRS OF A LIFE IN PHYSICS"

by Professor Richard Wilson, Department of Physics, Harvard University

Rich with details of growing up in England during WWII, Professor Wilson's book describes his separation from his parents during the forced evacuation of young people during the bombing of London by Germany.  He recounts his early days in physics and the intrique surrounding rumors of the development of a new weapon of unthinkable destructive power--that turned out to be the atomic bomb.  In the context of the espionage and antipathy of the Cold War, Wilson tells the story of his successful--and suspenseful--foray inside the U.S.S.R. to retrieve and smuggle out the personal papers of his close friend Andrei Dmtirevich Sakharov. Wilson used his brilliance, determination, and personal connections in the science world to work for peace around the globe anywhere there was injustice and rumors of genocide.  Wilson was there and participated in some of the landmark discoveries in his field of particle physics in its early days, and also helped pioneer the field of risk analysis.
